Hiring the Internet goes Mobile

iphone_screenshotSome of our particularly sharp-eyed readers may have noticed that we’ve just upgraded our blog.  After years of being hosted as part of the WordPress.com community of blogs, we’ve decided to make the move to the freedom afforded by self-hosting. Our main reason for making the switch is so that we can make use of some of the vast number of WordPress extensions to add extra features to this site.

For instance: this blog is now available in a slick format that’s optimized for mobile devices, courtesy of the sexy WPTouch plugin. Just visit hiringtheinternet.com on your iPhone, Ipod or Android phone to check it out.

We’re also making use of Twitter Widget Pro and the TweetMeme Button plugins to connect this blog with our tweets and yours, respectively.

So in the short term, you can expect that this site will be evolving over time – we’ll be adding new ways for you to give us feedback, and giving you new ways to read and share the articles we post. So if you see something new, we’d love you to try it out, poke at it and tell us what you think.

In the bigger picture, we’re looking to try out different widgets and plugins here on our blog, so we can make recommendations on what works, what doesn’t, what’s really too clever for words, and what you shouldn’t bother with. We’re not shy about being big fans of WordPress in general; it’s unquestionably a terrific blogging platform, but it’s also (debate all you want about this) a really solid, if simple, CMS platform for web development of all kinds.

Have a favorite plugin or widget you use? Let us know and we’ll check it out. We’ll be posting some more reviews of WordPress extensions soon.

Hi – I’ve got another great option for you – and it’s better than the one you’ve installed!

It’s called the Wapple Architect Mobile Plugin for WordPress and it mobilizes your blog. It works for every single device, from a WML phone to a brand new swanky phone with XHTML. Images are dynamically resized and you get the option to really customize your blog any way you want.

In addition, you can upload mobile logos, style your site so the mobile version matches the website and you retain your brand identity. You also get loads of control over mobile SEO.

If you fancy giving it a go, the URL is http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wapple-architect/ – it’d be great to hear your feedback!

If you need any help setting it up or would like any assistance enhancing your mobile blog, get in touch over at http://mobilewebjunkie.com and I’ll do my best to lend a hand!
