MarketingCharts Help with Internet Research

hitwise-2009-september-print-media-websitesIf you’re a regular reader of this blog, you know that we use a lot of statistics and facts to present compelling cases for all manner of arguments regarding Internet marketing.

Of course, we don’t make that data up. No, we use sources such as eMarketer, MarketingProfs and other research entities that compile information that allow us to draw conclusions and provide our two cents on various topics on advertising and marketing across channels but especially online.

Unless you’re a subscriber to these services, however, you may not have access to all the information they hold. Information that can help you when planning your own marketing campaigns or campaigns for clients.

A great resource that we’ve found – which is available to everyone – is MarketingCharts, charts and data for marketers in Web and Excel formats.

Survey Says More People Watching TV Online Than Ever Before

hulu021The Los Angeles Times reported recently on the results of a survey conducted by the nonprofit Conference Board that says Americans are tuning in to their favorite shows on the Internet at a higher rate than ever before.

The quarterly Consumer Internet Barometer showed that nearly 25% of households in the United States now view TV programs online – up a staggering 20% over last year.

Most online viewers, or 43%, are watching new shows, while 35% are catching the sitcoms, comedies and dramas they missed on traditional TV. Less than 20% viewed reality programs, and another 18% got their adrenaline fix via sports programs online.

These statistics are congruent with data released by the Jack Myers Media Business Report, courtesy of eMarketer, that suggests that online ad spending will surpass print ad spending in 2012 to claim 13.6% of the total U.S. ad-spending pie.

Still, there’s a long way to go to regain traction. Overall U.S. ad spending is expected to drop 13.3% this year.

Find the full chart after the jump.

Does Your Company’s Graph, Poll or Chart Need a Makeover?

Make your visual aids more simple and easy-to-use.

Don’t you want to get rid of that bowl cut your friend has been sporting since 6th grade? Sometimes visual aids, like people, need a makeover. Among its many benefits, makeovers can give an unsightly graph a quick touch up, get rid of a poll’s unappealing colors or clear out a chart’s numerical clutter. The whole point of the makeover is to try and make what you have better than what it was before.

It is very important for businesses to make their visual aids very simple and easy-to-use so that audiences instantly understand the reason for them. If the visual aids are not easily understood companies risk having their audiences both miss the message and become alienated.

Get Your Message Across

The inspiration for this blog came as I was reading the daily news online. When I landed on the newsweek homepage, my eyes were drawn to a poll graph that asked whether I was or was not in support of the US bailout plan.

Litmus Puts Its 'Fingerprint' on E-mail Client Stats

fingerprint1Whoa! Color us impressed.

A new service from Litmus’ Fingerprint e-mail analysis system offers accurate, up-to-date statistics on e-mail client usage.

Until now, the Internet marketing industry had to rely solely on suspicion when it came to who was using what e-mail client, leaving us to test our e-mails blindly. Even then it was anybody’s guess how it’d turn out on the other end if recipients were using an e-mail client not on our radar. At the very least, the process made us feel better.

This new service, however – well, it can tell you exactly what e-mail clients your customers are using. By embedding a single line of HTML code in your e-mail newsletter template, Fingerprint will deliver near-real-time statistics with its patent pending technology.

Your head is spinning, right? Ours, too.

CNN Can't Hold Candle to PerezHilton.com

We know we’ve been a little heavy on the blog-themed posts lately, but we embrace the irony of blogging about blogging. Or something like that. We’re confused, too.

In any case, we recently discovered this ranking of the Top 10 Visited U.S. Blog and Personal Websites, and were taken aback by what and who appeared.

The top three aren’t so surprising. MySpace has the most daily users of any single social networking site – even if Facebook is steadily closing in on its lead. And Blogger and LiveJournal, well, collectively they have a user base in the tens of millions.
