Pros and Cons of Becoming a YouTube Partner – Revisited!

YouTubePartnerDue to the overwhelming amount of traffic we’ve received on one post in particular – “8 Advantages and Disadvantages of Being a YouTube Partner” – we thought we’d offer up a second helping on insight and info on this topic.

The first time around we outlined a few of the advantages – greater exposure, how ad revenue sharing can make you money, and neat-o page customization – and a few of the disadvantages, such as the language and location restrictions and copyright ownership.

Before we get into the pro and cons of partnering with YouTube, however, it’s important that you understand what a partnership with YouTube is. In a nutshell, partnering with the video-sharing site allows you to share in revenue-generating opportunities. Some of the benefits include sharing revenue from relevant InVideo ads overlaid on your videos and banner ads running next to your videos to earn money, participating in co-marketing & branded entertainment opportunities with top brand advertiser, and utilizing your own sales to sell your own ads.

That all sounds well and good considering the enormous reach of YouTube, facts that the Google-owned operation happily points out:

  • People are watching hundreds of millions of videos a day on YouTube, and uploading hundreds of thousands of videos daily.
  • YouTube is the number one video site on the internet and the 4th largest Internet destination in the world. (Nielsen NetRatings, December 2008)
  • YouTube attracted over 300 million unique video viewers across the world in December 2008. (Nielsen NetRatings, December 2008)
  • YouTube is the #2 Search engine in the world, after Google and before Yahoo! (comScore, October 2008)

Of course, there are lots of good things to gain as a YouTube partner – based on those statistics alone. But there’s another side of the partnership that YouTube doesn’t talk about – and rightfully so.

Gmail Users Read More Marketing E-mails

According to MailChimp, a fast-growing e-mail distribution service, Gmail users were most likely to open and click on marketing e-mails.

In a recent study, which eMarketer neatly compiled below, open rates varied among users of the top e-mail services, from a low of just over 20% for e-mails sent to AOL users to a high over nearly 31% among Gmail users. The click rate on e-mails sent to Gmail accounts was more than 7.4%, compared with rates between 4% and 5% for Yahoo!, AOL and Hotmail users.

Google search: Supersized!

It’s not your imagination, there IS something different about Google.com!

It actually took me two days to notice that the face of Google Search was different; I blame that on my browser’s super-convenient Google search bar, personally. In any case, it’s a subtle shift, but one that draws the eye. The buttons, the search box, and the suggestions text are all bigger, supposedly to make Googling even easier than before. And what does Google have to say about the change?

Google has always been first and foremost about search, and we’re committed to building and powering the best search on the web — now available through a supersized search box.

Coffee Break: Google, Google, Gmail, Bing Vs. Google, Blogs on Paper, and Michael Jackson doesn’t crash the Internet

Morning coffee mugI’ve got six goodies for you today.  Google just announced a new operating system based on their recently released web browser, Chrome.  Is it a threat to Windows? They also recently removed a little word that’s been hanging around your Gmail screen since you joined the tens of millions of users of that popular email service: “Beta”

Just to transition away from a heavy Google news day, we’ve also got a review of Microsoft’s new search engine, Bing, which was launched about a month ago, and how it compares to Google.  David Pogue seems to be quite smitten, but the numbers aren’t in Microsoft’s favor.  Since launch, Bing has been hovering at around 3% market share, while Google is still at around 89% (source: StatCounter).  But just because it’s the little guy doesn’t mean it’s not great.

Wolfram Alpha: Like Meth to a Mathematician

WolframAlpha3We first heard about Wolfram Alpha – a new “computational knowledge engine” – in an article on CNN.com about a new era of Internet search that we may be entering. The article lists sites like Twine and hakia – among others with unique qualities – which try to personalize searches, separating out results you would find interesting, based on your Web use. But Wolfram Alpha piqued our interest for two reasons: 1) we haven’t come across a search engine as comprehensively computational as Wolfram Alpha, and 2) we have a love-hate relationship with long division. Math is our nemesis.

Not everyone is singing Wolfram Alpha’s praises, however. This article on PCWorld.com by 49.96-year-old writer David Coursey, posted earlier today – when Wolfram Alpha officially launched – suggests that the engine may not be the “cyber wonderbrain” some might have expected.

Still, it’s pretty remarkable. And unless you have a tiny clone of Albert Einstein tucked away in your pocket protector, it will likely be useful at one point or another.
